Let me ask a silly question

If you have a credit balance of £100 to pay by Sept 4th, 2023 and a minimum repayment amount of £25.

What will happen

A) if you only pay £25?

B) you pay £60?

C) Pay £25, then pay another £50 by 30th and pay the £25 balance by October 5?

Answers will be appreciated.

Thank you

Hello everyone,

I got a letter from the council for council tax and I’m wondering if people pay as high as £188 each month as council tax. I was living in a serviced apartment with bills included so this is my first contact with bills.
Also as a student, I learnt I should either be exempted or pay a reduced rate.
My husband is working fully though.
What next steps can I take?

My second concern is the letter that was shared some days back about overworking.
I registered with two agencies and because shifts are not that stable, I can get one shift from each agency per week. I’m aggregate, it’s two shifts per week but both are 12 hours shift.
I have been concerned that this does not affect my PSWP application.
Can anyone share their thoughts

It depends on your expenses in the UK. If your new salary can cover it, then by all means preserve what you have in Nigeria by investing in mutual funds to earn some interest higher than normal savings account. But if you feel the naira savings would be at serious risk of depreciation, then try to move them over.

Hello folks, 3rd month in the Uk, recently got a job (to be starting soon), however, my major income is still in Naira from my Naija business, and the exchange rate is worrisome, should I still keep the naira savings in Nigeria 🇳🇬 or I should start converting to GBP irrespective of the rate.

Need experienced advice please.

Thank you.

Yes you will be asked those questions but it is fine to say that you are currently in talks with landlords and agents on those platforms I shared. They will understand that you do not need to have a contract in place before you get your visa.

Best option is look at Airbnb first and when you arrive, you now work towards a permanent solution. But you can check on Zoopla, OpenRent, RightMove websites for an idea into these.

What other information do you need for your pre-CAS? You might need to look in the other thread dedicated to UK Tier 4 Visa https://www.nairaland.com/7767052/uk-student-visa-tier-4#124465678

Ohhh I was expecting them to mention skilled worker visa or something, thanks for pointing that out though.

koonbey:

Didn't mention ILR. It mentioned leave to remain which is the technical term for a visa that grants residency status (even temporary).

I don't see any reason to doubt that it's real. Only thing I'd point out is that what they both have in common is switching before finishing their studies. Maybe that's why they had additional scrutiny?

Edit: I actually doubt these, especially the one that says 'Tier 2' because I don't think HO uses that term anymore since the end of 2020.

Hmmmm... It's confusing really thanks for the insight.

Zahra29:

The letter mostly looks and sounds authentic.I'd query the dates highlighted by HO as they are outside of the student visa expiry date, not sure that still counts as term time?
I have heard of a few cases recently where leave has been cancelled or refused due to working over 20 hours so it does sound like HO is taking a firmer stance.

Rejection reasons are clear. Next time the applicant should not use personal bank account for business purposes. If it is not avoidable, then when submitting bank statement for Visa, include a separate note explaining convincingly the sources of the additional funds and why it is so, for what purpose and try to back it up.

Always best to resist the urge to over shalaye (too much explanation) when it comes to visa applications. Try to get separate accounts for personal and business purposes. It is more professional.

The attachment below refers; please can this be appealed and how can one go about this. Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Business / Re: Diversion Of Diaspora Remittances To Black Market Weakens Naira - CBN by bigtt76(f): 8:57pm On Aug 11, 2023
There are many out there like Remitly, OhentPay etc... Just do a search and you will see them.

BoldBrainz:

This is impressively detailed, and I appreciate the effort you committed into putting these words down.

However, just out of curiosity, can you kindly help inundate me with at least two of those operational platforms facilitating the P2P diaspora remittances that are effectively sidelining the banks and licensed financial houses?
Business / Re: Diversion Of Diaspora Remittances To Black Market Weakens Naira - CBN by bigtt76(f): 8:47pm On Aug 11, 2023
Ok so this is how it should have worked.

CBN licensed some companies as international money transfer operators (IMTO) with the likes of Western Union, Moneygram and Flutterwave etc as one of such operators.

These operators are mandated to facilitate remittances from the diaspora into Nigeria with the Nigerian banks as their support. The banks are meant to buy up the dollars from these operators at a rate set by CBN (which for now is the I&E window rate floated).

The relationship is such that the IMTO would fund the foreign accounts of these banks via CBN's JP Morgan account abroad. And the CBN in turn would make available to the Nigerian banks locally the dollars.

But this hasn't been the case as we now have operators who facilitate inbound and outbound remittances using p2p channels meaning the banks have been sidelined in the scheme of things. The visibility of the banks you are still seeing is the paying out of Naira to the beneficiaries bank account from the pool of naira created by Nigerians looking for dollars to buy and settle transactions abroad.

Because of the monopolistic but liberal manner these platforms operate, demand is high but supply is now dictated by senders who also dictate the rates they want in exchange. This has now given rise to the exchange rate locally at the parallel market through which they operate.

For this issue so be resolved, CBN needs to be liberal with how forex can be accessed through the banks for outbound payments else many would shun the current system for the costly parallel market system. Form A or M for instance are too bureaucratic with costly delays in meeting demands.

These parallel market operators of the international remittances are also indirectly being pre-funded by multinational companies with their profits or investments trapped in Nigeria. Until those are settled it's going to be difficult getting the true benefits of the floated naira.

Another thing the CBN would've looked towards is cryptocurrency exchanges. Allow Nigerians to unabatedly have access to it as an option to access dollars via stable coins and that would ease the strain on their reserves.

BoldBrainz:
Shonubi has been talking nonsense for about a week now!!

To the best of my knowledge, there is no medium of remittance from the Diaspora that is outside the various operating windows run by banks and financial institutions.

There's no way you can lay hands on dollars sent to you from a sibling abroad, if you don't walk into a banking hall. All the flutterwave, Remitta, etc.., run transactions across borders, yes. But they basically deal with numbers, where you stand to receive alerts into your Nigerian accounts or domiciliary accounts, as the case may be. But there is no channel that hands over paper currency to an individual as proceeds from diaspora remittance, if not banks and other money houses.

So what's this load of garbage this clown is vomitting?!
Business / Re: Diversion Of Diaspora Remittances To Black Market Weakens Naira - CBN by bigtt76(f): 8:25pm On Aug 11, 2023
What do you expect when CBN gave Nigerians the option to cash out dollars from remittance directly? You think they cash out and take to the banks for conversion to naira or spend the dollars locally? That's the result of poor design thinking. With this I suspect they would soon suspend dollar cashout from remittance and clamp down on those remittance apps.

Schoolhike:

The decision you're facing is a complex one, balancing both short-term and long-term considerations. Here's a breakdown of the factors you've mentioned and some thoughts to guide your decision:

1. **Job Quality & Career Growth**:
- **Company A**: A lower-tier audit firm where you currently work part-time. It might offer more familiarity and continuity, but potentially less exposure to larger, more complex audits, and potentially slower career growth.
- **Company B**: A top 15 audit firm with a better reputation, presumably more extensive client exposure, and likely better opportunities for career progression.

2. **Compensation & Benefits**:
- **Company A**: Offers a lower salary and benefits package.
- **Company B**: Provides a significantly better pay and benefits package.

3. **Sponsorship & Visa Costs**:
- **Company A**: Provides 5 years of sponsorship. However, you bear the full cost of the Visa and IHS, which can be spread over time.
- **Company B**: Recommends the PSW visa route initially. They commit to covering sponsorship costs later, but this comes with the inherent risk of potential policy changes or the company's situation changing in the next 2 years.

4. **Job Security**:
- **Company A**: The 5-year sponsorship might offer a sense of job security, but it's crucial to understand any conditions or stipulations attached.
- **Company B**: The 2-year fixed contract offers a shorter period of certainty, but if you get chartered and they honor their commitment, this can change.

5. **Personal and Professional Goals**:
- **Company A**: Continuity and perhaps more immediate stability, but potentially slower career growth.
- **Company B**: Better alignment with your career aspirations, work-life balance, and other personal criteria.

**Considerations**:
- **Financials**: Even though Company B offers better pay and benefits, factor in the potential costs (and the stress associated with them) if for some reason they do not sponsor you later.

- **Stability vs. Growth**: Company A offers immediate stability with its 5-year sponsorship. Company B offers better growth prospects, but with the condition of sponsorship in the future.

- **Risk**: All decisions have inherent risks. With Company B, the risk is the potential of not getting sponsorship later, though they currently commit to it.

Given the factors above, if you are risk-averse and value immediate stability, Company A might be the safer bet. However, if you are more focused on long-term career growth, better compensation, and are willing to bet on yourself getting chartered and Company B following through on their commitment, then Company B seems to be the better choice, especially since it aligns better with many of your criteria.

Another angle and quite insightful, thanks for sharing.

mizGene:

Sponsorship is priority. However, I would balk at committing to a company for 5 years because I believe there will be better opportunities and also considering the financial visa app implications.

I would ask comp A to reduce COS to 2 years and give financial burden as reason, I think any reasonable employer should allow this. That way you get on the ILR journey asap without having to spend so much, and you can move companies later without feeling like you have wasted funds.
