humilitypays:The issue is how many people in Nigeria earn N1.2mln LEGITIMATELY? Probably not up to 100,000! Cos a Professor does not! I doubt Manager in even Zenith or GTB earns that much. I know an in law who is a DM in Zenith and she earns about N700k. I doubt anyone in civil service LEGITIMATELY earns that much - even Perm Sec. However, if one DOES earn that much, it is actually not bad by Nigerian standards and would be even better if earned outside of Lagos, Abuja and PH where housing in cheap and cost of living lower - such as Ibadan or Abeokuta or Enugu. That is very, very unlikely though, cos those types of locations have little to no industry that would pay that much. But going abroad goes beyond your salary and goes beyond today. It's also about tomorrow and your children. It's also about security (just one kidnap or robbery in Lagos traffic or encounter with herdsmen or bandits while travelling and your perspective may change), sanity (life in Nigeria just causes headache daily - from traffic to noise pollution to disorganized cities, to electricity) quality of life, quality education for kids (free, quality public schools and education that helps children to think and be creative, not the type here where you just cram and pass exams. Means your kids are more competitive for the future) and healthcare (just have a relatively serious illness in Nigeria, then your perspective may change) predictability (not just of salary or job, but also of political and infrastructural environment - knowing things will always work) The daily chaos of Nigeria just frustrates some people and they can't take it anymore. Many Nigerian's who grew up in Lagos, Aba, Onitsha etc think that level of disorganization is normal, so they never want anything better for themselves. if you were exposed to a sane life in the 70's and early 80's, the current Nigeria will tire you out. As people sometimes say, many Nigerian's don't know they are mad. It depends on what one considers a 'good' life and if you are willing to get it. If the madness of Oshodi and senseless traffic all over Lagos works for you....if the madness of Apapa for 10 years now is normal and acceptable to you as a way of life, then maybe you are the one with a problem of perception of what should be normal. |
SIRTee15:Well said. A lot of those who migrate are actually top people from banks and oil companies who earn more than this N450k or even N1mln someone was talking about. Oil company full staff earn close to N2mln monthly in some cases and some will still leave. It's not just about the salary, but quality of life and future sanity. Like people have said, doing well in Nigeria as banker/oil coy staff actually makes you less secure cause you are more of a target for kidnappers and armed robbers cos of your better car. Or should I work for Shell and refuse to buy a decent , modern car? Same thing, you never know what your driver or nanny is planning for you. The risks of Nigeria are just too high. Also even if you have a Prado, isn't it tiring to keep driving in traffic and pot hole filled roads, in noisy environment, with riff raffs all over, planless cities, etc. Travelling from common Lagos to Akure, I will ask like 10 people if they travelled recently, the state of the road, whether kidnappers and herdsmen are operating etc. What kind of life is that?? And besides, Nigeria keeps getting worse and is more and more unstable, so maybe better to leave while you can, if you can!! |
If police anywhere asks you to stop and you instead prefer to go on a high speed chase and then you crash, whose fault is that other than your own? The crash is due to the son driving wildly at high speed. The son can be charged for overspeeding and reckless driving. Sentiments aside, mama no get case. |
dre11:Mounting costs!!? Yet Zenith Bank and co keep declaring higher and higher profits every year? |
angelfallz:Leave that thjng. I know close to 20peopke who have moved to Canada and they are all working in good places such as banks, insurance companies, IT firms etc. It depends on your quality. These are people who previously worked for Zenith, GTB, Shell, Mobil, KPMG, Deloite, Unilever etc in Nigeria, with solid experiences. If you go to Canada with degree, but with no pedigree from here, well maybe you may find it more difficult. Same reason why poor quality graduates are almost unemployable here. |
kalu61:Which manpower do we have exactly? What technology in drilling, manufacturing, science etc has any Nigerian developed? Even in social sciences, what new economic theorem has any Nigeria developed? Even in terms or management science, what new management practice has any Nigerian developed? We have graduates that can barely read or write. Have not used computer before. Yet across the developed world, kids of 10 are cracking codes for fun. Even where Nigerians are academically strong, such as someone with a first class, you often find that the individual is book smart, but cannot really create anything with that knowledge. Our education system makes our graduates to be administrators and not innovators and creators. If you go work for a multinational like Unilever, Shell, BAT etc, you'll see huge differences between how a foreigner works and how a Nigerian typically works in terms of delivery and creative mindset. So I see no need for this ranting of the minister. Are there not Nigerians posted abroad in many of these companies too? |
FG doesn't have the balls to do what has needed to be done. When FG was making noise about deregulation when crude was $30, didn't it have a plan for when crude would be $55 and above? Just shows how thinkless they are. If it had been a private company, there should already be a communication and implementation plan to cover all scenarios. But the idiots are caught flat footed as usual. |
vRendoh:It’s wierd how one can hardly find anyone who claims to be an auto importer or clearing agent to provide a clear mathematical formular about how to calculate what you should pay? Ideally it should be cost of car in USD * govt e rate of 390 *1.40 (40% being custom duty of 35% and import levy of 5%), or something like that. Point is that, it should be undeniably clear what the charges should be, even if they have a means of reducing it, which will typically be by somehow reducing the value of the car itself. But most people dance around the issue of explaining the calculation formula. If anyone here knows it, please explain. I also saw a thread somewhere where it was cost of vehicle *e rate *1.282. Not sure if that is accurate also. |
davillian:Indeed. Hopefully we can now afford more recent cars. Like 10 years ago quite a number of Nigerians could afford new cars, especially if you worked in a bank or oil company. But with devaluation and these import duty and import levy, accord of N5.2mln in 2013 went as high as N17mln in 2019. |
Recently the 2020 Finance bill was passed by NASS and signed into law by Pres Buhari. The bill contained provisions reducing vehicular import levy from 35% to 5%. I am waiting for all the car dealers here to begin to reduce the cost of their comparable vehicles in the months to come. |
Azmanaty:. I want the right one! |
ijustdey:Such a law makes sense, but it will likely not be passed. Even if its passed, it will not be implemented. |
olumide4christ:Well said. The people of the South South and South East should take a good hard look at their governors for a change. The only city in Rivers State is PH, yet with all the money Rivers state gets, hard to see where it goes. |
ggood:Train is less about human travel and more about cargo freighting. Rail lines dedicated to passenger traffic barely break even globally. Freight is what can sustain a rail line and make it profitable. |
Does e.money pay any tax? Either personal income tax or property tax. If I were the state tax chairman, he'd be paying no less than N5mln a year as property tax for an "ultra luxury" residential property. |
isthatso:This is the real issue. The sustainability of Nigeria is up in the air. I know a lot of well to do people that could live comfortably in Nigeria but are still moving. Executive Directors in banks, oil company staff etc. The main thing that would make me relocate now is security and long term viability of Nigeria cos the country just doesn't seem to be going anywhere. |
Miracle1991:The only reason why this money was not stolen is because it was aloan from China. And not the type of loan where they disburse cash, but the type of loan where the value is agreed and then the Chinese contractor does the work to specified standard. That is the reason why the work was done quickly, so that China can start counting the loan very quickly. If it had been handled directly by the Ministry via contracting, it would never have seen the light of day. Point I'm making is that it has less to do with Buhari or even Amsechi management skills and just the nature of the loan. |
Bunch of scoundrels all scavenging for his money. |
seunmsg:It is totally insufficient. To put it in context, Texas in USA has a budget of N48trln, for a state with 29mln people. And there counties (like local governments) have even bigger budgets than Lagos State. Even the CITY of Houston alone, with population of 2.5mln has a budget of N2trln. So money available within Texas in totality for development, infrastructure etc will exceed N100trln. |
rabzy:I find is surprising that in Lagos lorry drivers stop themselves with public infrastructure, yet they are not made to pay for the public infrastructure. They just come And tow their vehicles and they are gone. |
Lanrelagboi:What we need are smart traffic lights that change frequency of green, Amber and red lights based on the flow of traffic and time of day. It's really stupid that all the traffic lights on Ozumba all the way to Ajah all have the exact same timing sequence regardless of time of day or traffic flow. |
victme1:Really!!! You think approvals are given for this sort of thing? If you notice, his convoy was moving at relatively slow pace and the road in front of him was clear. That suggests there would have been mad traffic behind him if no vehicle could pass him. So we now agive approvals for private citizens to cause madd traffic and take over the road? Ok o!! |
Nigerians. See where your mobile police officers are deployed to. Instead of fighting killer herdsmen, kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists, area boys etc, they are all following e-money and his type all around town. |
ebukajay184:What exactly is classical studies? |
NaMeAboki:Where is this fake infographic from. If its legit, why not post the list of the positions and the names of the appointees. |
CodeTemplar:Leaders with dictatorial mindsets hate hearing the truth. It's always a threat to them. Instead of engaging with your people, you threaten them when they have different opinions on national issues. |
Why can't the booking be done online though. Same as is done for visa services. Register online, pick an appointment time online and show up at that time slot. See how stupid we are in this country!! |
PARADIZEPRIEST:And if it started under Jonathan, why have Nigerians not registered to now? I've had my NIN number for almost 5 years now. As usual Nigerians wait till last minute. |
ijustdey:Interesting that Nigeria is the 26th biggest economy, but is not the 26th best in anything good such as education, innovation, technology, ease of doing business, infrastructure, exports, healthcare, quality of governance etc. In all of these, we'd likely be like 160 position. |
