1. Cost is not the issue, transmission is. We have installed capacity of more than 10,000 MW but the TCN can't handle more than 3,000 MW. 2. We have very low SIM and data costs. Less than $1. GSM has been in the country for just 2 decades. 3. Hydropower, which we have, is the cheapest electricity generation mode. Nuclear is the most expensive for baseloads. Natural gas/clean coal is the next cheapest. We actually have the cheapest forms of power generation. 4. Nigerians pay more with generators, even kerosen lamps are more expensive /kWh or even /lumens (measuring light) than electricity. 5. TCN can't transmit 10% of the country's real power needs. Whatever 'connections' being made are not the cause of TCN's fundamental incapability. We need private transmission. It needs to be liberalised. That will necessitate investment. Right now, no one can invest in transmission. Beancounter94: And it is higher in Nigeria because
1.It costs more to produce power in Nigeria.
2.Then there is the fact that a lot has to be fixed to guarantee 24 hour cost of power....adding to the cost.(When GSM came to Nigeria first time, we ended up spending higher for SIM and airtime, procceds which were used to build up the network we have now. Once it was up and running, prices dropped.)
3.Then there is the fact that we don't use cheaper sources of power like nuclear power for instance.
4.Additionally, at N50 per kwh, for 24 hours, an average US consumer would pay more. And thus US power companies have more profit than Nigerian companies.
5.Throw in the fact that at least 40% of Nigerian subscribers for power in Nigeria do not pay anything...they use the power illegally. That money is passed on to people who actually pay their power bills. That does not happen in the USA. |

Power in North America is ~$0.10/kWh. Going down to even $0.06/kWh for commercial users in some jurisdictions (Quebec, Canada). That is (at higher black market rates), N50/kWh. For power, we need to liberalise supply and bypass the TCN. Beancounter94: Power and refineries are not working because Nigerians don't want to pay for petrol and power at market price.
Ideally, we should be paying N80 and above per kwh for power, and N350 and above for petrol. That would mean that the power and refineries make enough of a profit to work well enough and fix things.
But Nigerians don't want that...so power costs N49-71, AND PETROL costs N163 ...AND a subsidy is paid running into billions to cover loses...which at the end of the day is not sufficient.
Before you start...Niger is poorer than we are, yet their single 20000bpd refinery works because fuel costs N377 THERE....,meaning the refinery makes enough of a profit to work...and to export petrol to 3 African countries...Nigeria included. |

Are you marrying your pastor? Marry your long term sta ke girlfriend (who you abandoned for months) and leave the other lady. EmperorTolson: I'm 27 years old, I worked in a private school where I earn a little above 30k in one of the states in South West (not Lagos and Ogun). I'm still staying with my parent though. Last year, I introduced my relationship of 5 years to my parent and my pastor and she was welcomed with both hands. She's a pretty, hard-working, supportive and trusted to the core. She's been tested countless times. Also, she's 25 and a secondary school holder but she's a stylist and she's her own shop and I believe that she earns more than me at times. Early this year, due to family issues and my stubbornness, I decided to leave my work and my parent house cos I felt they're choking me with too much advice and they expect too much from me being the first graduate. So, I left home and I decided not to tell anybody my whereabout cos I know my parents will do anything to have me back in the house. I also changed my phone number. For a month or two months that I wasn't at home, I decided to cut communication between me and my girlfriend cos if she knows my whereabout, she'll disclose it. After countless calls that my pastor and my parents put to my girlfriend, she kept telling them that she didn't hear from me since I left home which is true but the problem is that they didn't believe her.
Eventually, they traced me through a friend and asked me to come home which I did. I resumed back at my previous place of work. I met a lady when I resumed and we became friends. This particular lady is also a graduate but from experience, I can tell that she's wayward, she knows every hotel and bars around the town and she always tell me about old men that wants to have sex with her (just to mention but few).
Fast forward, my pastor noticed the closeness between me and the lady and as such tries to matchmake us because he also know the lady through her family. Now, my pastor is telling me that I should leave my girlfriend of 5 years which I truly love on the ground that she's not a graduate as I am and that she wasn't helpful in finding me when I left home..
My pastor is someone I respect so much. What should I do in situation like this? I don't want to leave the woman I knew I'm going to marry right from the first month we met for a woman I knew has been sampled by many and not showing any sign that she'll change. I can't be telling my pastor about everything but if I refuse to listen to him, he might begin to think that I've stopped listening to him.

Oga sir, You said "quiet billionaire". That description is patently false. In this age of remote work, and with the education Nigerians have (from within and outside Nigeria), our people should have been killing software positions. We were. I personally know people who were regularly getting $3k plus a month to work in software. In Nigeria, that is more than comfortable but the the US companies, that's a savings of 50+%. Those jobs have been drying out for new entrants solely due to fraud. Those who could, relocated to Ghana, Kenya or South Africa. How many people like Cubana, who appeared out of nowhere, have eventually been arrested? Especially in the US? matrixme: Oga, obi Cubana is not the one that says your country should be poor. On a normal day, he doesn't throw money on the streets. He wanted a lavish burial to fulfill a promise to his late mum and that's exactly what he gave. Your president that was drinking 35 naira Milo, the other day, forming humble, how has things improved under him? If the monies spent at the funeral is up to your state's revenue, then it shows you're from one of those northern states with no much value. Obi Cubana has not stopped anyone's legitimate business. Nigerian startups are still getting juicy deals and endorsements out there. You're just poor! |

Assuming this story isn't leaving out some important facts, thank your lucky stars. don4real18: Some months ago, I was supposed to get married to a lovely lady (Alias-Celia) whom I thought the universe made just for me. I find it unfortunate that this beautiful story was just never meant to be. This write-up is my story. ______________________________________________ Five years ago, while we both stared at the moon sitting in my compound and telling tales of our childhood, I studied her profile. She had a perfect-shaped jaw with rounded edges, full lips, and her ability to smile with so much ease. Her skin glowed against the moonlight, and her aura filled with so much innocence. It was no surprise when I finally popped the question asking her to be my girlfriend.
Four days later, I got a yes as her reply, and it became a beautiful relationship. Our companionship was a show of true love, or so I thought. She taught me to be a better kisser, and I made her be a better lover. We did almost everything together, and when challenges came, we solved them even though she was stubborn; A bit more than me.
Many moons down the line of love and sometimes distrust, she was to relocate to the FCT, the state where her family resides. I knew I was going to miss her, and it wasn't easy letting her go.
We did part ways at the airport, and ever since then, we were always on calls. I did notice later that I did most of the calling, and as time went on as it must, the regular calls became once in a while, and soon, it became longer.
I did play a little with other girls and tried getting into a relationship with others, but it just didn't work out. Perhaps, I wanted the kind of love that they could not give in return. It was no surprise when years later, my calls with Celia became regular and, I didn't mind doing most of the calling.
Soon, I traveled to Abuja, and she didn't seem enthusiastic about seeing me, even though my love clawed at my heart with a renewed burst of energy. This time, I decided that I wouldn't let go. I stayed in FCT for a while, I met her family, and I guess her feelings returned.
I returned to Lagos to continue working, and some months down the line, I was in Abuja again to see the one that I loved. We agreed that she would have to come to Lagos, and some months after I left Abuja, she arrived in the rowdy Lagos.
She met my family, and I popped the question, "will you marry me?" in a romantic atmosphere, and she was so happy that she was going to spend the rest of her life with me.
We made plans until the event of Corona took place, and it greatly affected my business. I became broke, but that didn't stop me from traveling to 3 different states to meet her family members and her pastor in FCT.
We did agree that we were going to have a small wedding, and the day of the introduction came, and I traveled with my family, spent a lot of money on hotel bills, etc. It did go well, and that was when it started.
She reneged on our agreement on the size of the wedding. She told me that she wanted to have her dream wedding although she had no money. I could not bring myself to spend so much on a wedding only to end up eating hand to mouth in my marriage. It became a back and forth argument. Her dad wanted it small, but her siblings wanted it big. My mum did try to advise her, but she felt my mum shouldn't have a say in her wedding being a supposed generation Z.
I did have to look for ways she would be happy without spending too much. Then the counseling issue came, and I was informed to come back to Abuja by her pastor. It was inconvenient, so I told her to recommend virtual counseling because I'm not ready to go and spend a lot staying there. She was mad at my response, saying that it was disrespectful, suggesting such to a supposed man of God, making it disrespectful to God.
I did try to let her know that we could use the money to do something else, but she was adamant. After some time, I did succumb to her demand, but she felt that it should not have led to an argument in the first place and decided to call the wedding off. I tried calming her down and even suggested that we postpone it, but she wouldn't budge with a reason so petty. It hurt at first. It made me lose focus for a while, but I guess I've pretty patched up now hence my decision to share with you all.
God bless us all. |

Let's hear from the horse's mouth....
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Peace Airlines, Allen Onyema, says it is untrue to say that President Muhammadu Buhari does not like the Igbos.
Onyema defended his viewpoint on Saturday on the grounds that his airline had hugely benefited from the current administration.
I’m a beneficiary of Buhari’s kindness to Igbos – Air Peace boss
“I thank God for our President, Muhammadu Buhari, it is very untrue that he does not like the Igbo. Without me being a member of his party, or any party, I am a beneficiary of his support for indigenous businesses.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has given me destinations they have never given anybody, yet I am an Igbo man, from Anambra,” Onyema said on an interview with Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS).
Furthermore, he stressed that people should not read negative meanings to the good works of the Buhari administration.
“I don’t know anybody, I don’t have any godfather, President Buhari through his minister, Hadi Sirika, has given me China, London, Portugal, the entire Europe, United States and India. “He’s even given me Jedda, and I’m not a Muslim; the government has given me about twenty destinations to fly to.”
He added that; “The President wants equal economic development everywhere.”
These are the Great and True Igbo men true igbos listen to.
