CareerRe: How Can One Have A Job And Run An M.sc Program Concurrently? by gabicon: 9:06am On May 24, 2018
RuggedArab:
I have been thinking how you combine your job and your Masters (full time) program. I know some people that have started their M.sc but could not complete it because of their job.

Some of them say they could not create time to attend 50% of lectures. Most times they go into the exam not knowing what to write. One of my close pal even tried to finish but did not write his thesis because there was no time for him to do it.

Now, over to you that have been combining your job and your Masters program and those that have completed theirs while working; How did you combine both?
It difficult in Nigeria especially when higher institutions don't have flexible programs. I work and run my MBA online in a uni in the uk, my friend just finished an MSC in energy systems from a uk uni all done online. yes it is expensive and may require longterm planning but it cuts the stress. I remember a friend running to attend a test on Saturday at one of our Nigerian uni's and the lecturer not showing up. you cant try out unicaf.
BusinessRe: Why Dangote Closed His Tomato Factory And Lessons You Can Learn From It by gabicon: 9:40pm On May 12, 2018
Solstar:
I love the way you ended it. It is not a spiritual attack, it is a religious attack.

Nigerians spend all their time fasting and praying and forget to get creative, then they run around to find fast money in order to buy imported food, cream, phone and wrist-watches so they dont have to waste time being creative when they should be worshipping God. Now churches run 5 services on Sundays, and a midweek service on wednesdays, not forgetting tarry nights and vigils.

The mohammedans are not left out, they pray a fuccking 5 times a day, and are constantly checking their time to make sure they dont miss a date with Allahu, what remains of their time is spent separating quarrels between their 4 wives, the rest is spent reminding the kids of the need to go to the Alfas and Imams for tutelages.

So, what time do we have to plant tomatoes or engineer apples that can grow on our climate.

We are not poor because we are religious, we are poor as a country because we have found an excuse in God.

Yet money does not grow on trees. Dangote should have known better. He has been making serious business mistakes of late, one of which is building $18B Refinery when electric cars and solar panels are the future. I really question the true source of his wealth. How are his projects financed ? From which sources ? He pays back loans at the speed of light, well, almost. Just to create impression of 'source' ? It could be these politicians just financing him till his retirement and eventual demise. It could just be a ponzi that takes money from early mules and paying the new politicians. I envy the man, I truly do, but if I have access to such money, then I should be able to buy up Nigeria and put everyone on a universal basic income from what I can do with that money.

As it is with the tomato factories, so will it be with the refineries in the next 20 yrs. This is the new world order.
Dangote may have been making mistakes of late, but the refinery he is building is not one of such mistakes. Think of it how much do we spend as a country importing PMS alone? It runs to billions of dollars yearly to be specific $28 billion. Yes that much (https://www.google.com.ng/amp/s/www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/06/20/kachikwu-nigeria-spends-28bn-annually-to-import-petrol/amp/)

50% of the price of PMS is tied to crude then running cost, dangote should be raking in nothing less than $15 billion profit yearly and if he runs for 10 years only you can do the maths of his wealth.

if I remember correctly dangote said the refinery will cost $9 billion, dangote is financing about $3 billion, Africa development Bank is bringing 2 billion, the indians and Chinese are also involved.

Secondly it will take more than 10 years for electric cars to gain footing in Africa, I mean we're are the infrastructure? We don't have electricity to power our homes is it cars we will be powering?

Before we castigate dangote for poor business choice it will be nice to remember that running a business is not a walk in the park and mistakes are bound to happen some one can recover from some we can't.

We need to discuss as a nation how we decommission people with combat skills, and how we can integrate them back to the society. I mean the man was trained to secure lives and property with a weapon if necessary, when he is dismissed how else do we expect him to make a living considering that he has only one skill?

You no pay deve. For those that don't understand, dev means development levy, it is the birthright of the jobless youth in the Niger delta, they extort this monies from those who bring development to the community. This has been an age long tradition that has repelled development and investment in the region.

Funny enough I agree with him, the youths in Nigeria are lazy. If we were not lazy we would have collected our country back from this old folks. If the youths can create a booming movie industry and a booming music industry and a booming startup industry, making Nigeria boom is not hard, we are a few success away from it.

dake40:
Education isn't cheap in other countries but why would a country pay irregular 20k wages and expect citizens to pay 200k school fees?
Most people in developed countries don't attend university and many of those that attend do so on credit with student loans. The major reason for poor education standard is poor funding, in Nigeria a year's tution can purchase the necessary textbook for the year. What kind of Education is that?

Yes 85% of Nigerians are poor but that doesn't mean we should kill the educational institutions. As it is the state of education is already a national embarrassment
EducationRe: AAUA Increases School Fee From 25k+ To 120k+ by gabicon: 7:59am On Apr 07, 2018
The truth is that education all over the world is expensive. 150k for a degree is cheap, however university admission is a contract between a student and a university. Meaning that the fees that is stipulated in the admission letter should span the length of a course of study. Meaning that if your fees is 10k in 100 level, you will pay 10k also in 200, 300&400 levels. This formula helps a student plan for a degree. It's rather unfair for someone that paid 10k a year ago to start paying 200k now. Advise to students and prospective students, get involved in the political system, know the stand of who you want to vote for on your education this will reduce surprises. I can hear someone day politics blablabla, take responsibility so that your complaint is valid, I believe that if all the students of the school go out to vote they can determine who becomes govonor.

Sometimes some Nigerians cease to amaze me, in a country with 42% population leaving in extreme poverty and similar number living in midium poverty, what do you expect? do u expect a poor man that has not eaten to admire a dolphin (a potential next meal)? The way those of us that are privileged to go to school reason is a footstep to illiteracy. Hunger is no respecter of endangered species, we should work at reducing poverty and to crucify someone trying to survive.

InvestmentRe: Savings Vs. Investments: Which Is Better? Any Difference? - Topwritersden by gabicon: 11:34am On Mar 09, 2018
One precedes the other, we are meant to save then invest what has been saved. Why? Savings have potential of depreciation, while investment has potential for multiplication. $1 million 20 years ago is stronger than $1 million today thanks to inflation but $1 million invested in 20 years ago with a 10% interest rate, you can do the maths.

TonyeBarcanista:
PDP NATIONAL YOUTH LEAGUE REACT TO THE ALLEGED DEFECTION OF JERRY GANA, ADENIRAN AND OTHERS

We the entire members of Peoples Democratic Party National Youth League (PDPNYL) received the news of alleged defection of some leaders of our great party including, Prof Jerry Gana, Prof Tunde Adeniran and Alhaji Shehu Gabam to Social Democratic Party (SDP) with great shock and sadness.

It is our candid opinion that the least expected of people that have had so much gains from the party is to join hands with the indefatigable leadership of our great party led by Prince Uche Secondus and his team of National Working Committee to rebuild the party for greatness, reposition it and Regain every lost ground.

While we mourn the exit of the aforementioned leaders from the party, it is our candid belief that the PDP National Youth League will not be broken.

The PDPNYL shall continue to reach out to and galvanize young Nigerians into our great party to ensure maximum support of the youths ahead of 2019 election.

The PDPNYL shall always liaise with the office of the National Youth Leader, National Publicity Secretary, National Women Leader, National Secretary, National Chairman and every other relevant organs at all levels to achieve this aim.

Though we believe that the PDP is the only party that can resoundingly defeat the ruling All Progressive Congress in 2019 and beyond, we wish the aforementioned leaders well in their new found party.

Zainab Al-Amin
National Publicity Secretary,
Peoples Democratic Party National Youth League

FamilyRe: My Mother-In-Law And My Wife Undermine Me by gabicon: 11:56pm On Mar 02, 2018
kapelvej:
Hello all

I am not new to nairaland, this is just a new account.
I am more than fed up with my mother in law and my wife, I think they are undermining me. Recently my mother in law went to visit my mum who was in another state with my eldest brother because we lost someone in the family, she spent a night there, she never told me before going, even while there, she never told me she was there, she came back almost 4 days now, she still did not tell me. Although my brother told me the day she came.

She also told my wife- her daughter about the journey, but this was only when she arrived. My wife told me about the journey, and I asked my wife why did her mother do that, she said her mother was of the opinion that if she tells any of us, we may not allow her to go. I try to tell my wife that it even makes it worse, she flared up and started getting angry and saying different things. I was not surprised because she always quarrels anytime I try to express my feelings over issues like that.

Now the big story is that before now, in the past 18 months my mother in law has been avoiding my calls, reason being that my wife did some nasty things, she heard of it, she was not sure of the action I would take, she told her pastor to call me, I got talking with the pastor, the pastor was trying his best to resolve the issue, at a time my mother in law wanted to manipulate the pastor against me, the man stood his ground- God bless him. My mother-in-law so scared the pastor will tell me about the manipulation she wanted to carry out started avoiding me and the pastor till now. we only spoke on those three occasions because they were Easter, Christmas and New year. I am already thinking of telling my wife to go and marry her mum because they are the same thing.

I am seriously thinking of making a huge trouble out of this to drive home the point that I am not as weak as both of them think. Especially for a woman that keeps threatening me with divorce and insults me at will, and a crafty mother in law who is only interested in herself and her daughter...

PLEASE I NEED YOUR KIND RESPONSES
Your mother in law is an adult I don't think she needs your permission to visit your family or go to any family event.

secondly, stop making are more relevant than she is in your home, its a recipe for disaster.

CareerRe: What Advice Would You Give Undergraduates About The Labour Market? by gabicon: 2:20pm On Jan 25, 2018
Understand that there has been a paradigm shift over the years, we have moved from an education economy to a skill/value economy. every employer or clients have just one question for you which is "what can you do?".

you have to learn how to do something better than everyone else. no career is demeaning, it may look so but the addition of a little innovation makes it a gold mine, who better to add the innovation than you.

Decide what you want to do with your life in school, if you don't, it will take you 2-3 years of struggle to do so.

Don't forget to always have a contingency plan (if I don't get a job in a bank after 2 months I will start frying yam & akara on my street).

write down your plan with practical steps to realizing it.

N.B: Starting a business should be the thought of every graduate (there are more people ready to invest in a business than there are people taking practical steps to start one)

Actions and consequences, young people need to weigh them both. A messed up life all because of 3 rounds of sex, the action doesnt justify the consequence. As a young man you cant keep glavanting around clubs and pubs every other day, it ok to enjoy life but its more important to build life.

We all need to be a little more responsible.

Atiku cant beat PMB in the north irrespective of recession or hardship, the north votes by candidate popularity, to win Atiku will have to capture all the south's vote in a landslide and struggle for some states in the north. The power block (OBJ, TYD, Gowon etc) wont allow atiku become president cos he cant be politically trusted nor controlled, they never go against their military brother by the way. If I were PDP I will rather go for shekarau he has more acceptability.

sorry folks voting is an exercise done for an already result finalized result.
CareerRe: School And Work At The Same Time. How Feasible? Advice Needed. by gabicon: 10:42am On Dec 04, 2017
Its all about time management, how well can you manage your time? if you want to work and school you will have to run on a schedule that cant be broken, studying engineering can be very tasking especially in Nigeria were our curriculum is not tailored to accommodate working and schooling. In the UK i know of people who worked to pay their bills and school fees, finishing top in their class but that was possible because of how flexible the system was.

we have moved from the education economy to the skill economy, meaning that employers dont care what school, grades, or course you study what they are after is what can you do, getting experience in school will put you in an advantage position when you finally graduate.

just be committed, consistent, disciplined, and run on a schedule n it is possible to work and school.

The 1950's generation was a generation of degrees, while the 1980's and below generation is one of skill. so if you think because you had a first class you will get a job, you are leaving in the past. The new generation of work ask the question "what can you do?". our education system is decades behind until we change it nothing will change.

Nigeria has always had problems of service delivery in the public service sector, to solve most these problems will require a decentralisation of authority. I wont be suprised that pasports are being processed in abuja n returned abroad or most papers have to be aproved in abuja etc. We need to stop this trend and instill professionalism in the civil service.
