OP, I also relocated to Nigeria a few years ago. Based on my experience, there are a couple of factors you have to consider:

1. Back up plan. It is imperative that you have a back up plan in case things go south in this country. So many people did not take this into consideration and are paying for it. When you have the option of moving back, your mind is at ease. If you have problems such as health, academic or other issues, you need to have an option.

2. Capital. This is obvious. To survive this messed up country, you need a lot of capital. Do not TRY to relocate if you don't have enough capital to keep you going for a sustained period of time in this country. Also, do not invest all your money in this country. It is suicidal. The current exchange doesn't favor Nigerians at all ($1:N450). Always have some assets where you are previously based in case of unforeseen circumstances.

3. Accommodation. In regards to accommodation, the question to ask is where you were based before moving abroad. Everyone is talking about Lagos or Abuja. What if you don't know any one in those cities? Most repatriates choose either Lagos or Abuja for obvious reasons. The problem is that those two cities have the highest cost of living in the country. Can you afford them?

4. Contacts. In a country like Nigeria, who you know is very important if you want to make life easy for yourself. Yes, there are quite a few repatriates who didn't know anyone and were able to adjust but I wouldn't recommend that you take that risk. You need contacts for business and day to day activities.

5. Infrastructure problems. As you are well aware, Nigeria has a lot of problems, chief among them is lack of adequate infrastructure. You have to provide your own light, water and internet services. Speaking of internet services, please bear in mind that the internet service in this country is very poor. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If your job requires you to work online, you need to reconsider your option to relocate. A lot of my friends who were stuck here during the initial lockdown complained that they couldn't work from home as the internet service was very slow. Think about that.

6. Side Hustle. It is imperative to have a side hustle as salary income is not enough to sustain you unless you are willing to live below your means. I am not good at business so I can't provide any recommendations regarding side hustles.

These are all the factors that you need to consider before you take the plunge of moving to Nigeria. It's advisable to make a few trips to the country in order to assess the environment and make a decision.

Stop wasting your time. Nigerians love mediocrity. We are a nation of shameless people. We should be ashamed of not having constant electricity in 2021 when countries like[b] PALESTINE and Jordan [/b]have 24 hrs supply. We should be ashamed of the fact that Nigeria, the largest energy producer in Africa, i[b]mports oil and does not have a SINGLE functional refinery[/b]. You make a big point. It doesn't make sense to go abroad, spend millions of naira in foreign currency only to come back and come with home based graduates for Government jobs. Foreign graduates should be bringing something different to the table to set themselves apart from others. Otherwise, your degree is a waste of resources. As a practicing lawyer of 5 years, I can tell you that the legal profession is the most unequal profession in this country. On one hand, you have extremely rich lawyers such as Afe Babalola, Babalakin, Paul Usoro and other very senior lawyers. On the other hand, you have so many lawyers earning below the national minimum wage. Nevertheless, law is not restricted to litigation. You can work in the private sector (Oil companies, banks, telecoms etc), you can work in the public sector (Ministry of Justice, other government parasitals) and even international organizations (UN, ICC, IBA etc). You can even go into politics (Vice President, Senate President, many senators, two Ministers and 3 Governors are lawyers). It all comes down to what you want to do but for the love of God, run away from litigation. There's no money there. If you are not working in a top 10 law firm, forget it. You can carve out your own niche in practice and make progress (power law, i.t. law, entertainment law etc). I have given you a list of options to choose from. Choose wisely and ignore what others are saying on this forum.

I am glad that I have found a like-minded person in this depreciating forum. The level of ignorance not just in this forum but in the country as well is nauseating. I work in my family's law firm and I know how important the staff are to the running of the firm. Every occupation in society matters from the police, doctors, scientists, teachers and even cleaners. COVID has shown that scientists, teachers, doctors and the police are very vital to any society that wants to function. Everyone in this country wants to become rich overnight. It cannot happen. It is the duty of political office holders to enact favourable economic policies aimed at growing the economy so that actual entrepreneurs not barbers, powerbank retailers, bakers, tailors, bead makers, tillers, carpenters and whatnot can create jobs via the provision of goods and services.


However, one major way people can become billionaires and quickly at that is via tech if one aims to have his/her product to be consumed by many people especially outside Nigeria and if possible outside Africa. Imagine having a software product that has its major consumers’ are domiciled in Switzerland, Singapore and the US? The person behind the product is more likely to be a billionaire than the person whose major markets are Malawi, Gabon, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana. This is because Swiss, Singaporeans and Americans are way way richer than Malawians, Gabonese, Nigerians, South Africans and Ghanaians. Also, the nature of tech business differs significantly from physical business largely based on PPE (property, plant and equipment) and products offerings. It is why PayStack is highly valued than most physical based businesses in Nigeria even though she was formed six years ago or why tech business generate more revenues than say auto manufacturers or agriculture focused business.





The timeframe is shorter to generate a billion naira monthly by a tech firm (which many tech businesses in Nigeria currently do effortlessly) than say a food business. However, at Nigeria’s current state with wanton un(under)employment, the country requires massive industrialisation not services as there is a limit to how many people tech businesses can employ. India is a case study regarding this anomaly. Also, a country with a thriving tech sector definitely has a well-established or thriving industrial base because they are the ones who will consume high valued tech services. How many mid-level Nigerian firms can consistently purchase SAP/Salesforce enterprise services which are priced in dollars? But these companies have many customers in Germany and the US respectively because of their industrial bases.


In summary, when anyone tells you not to relocate because you can become a billionaire in Nigeria, do well to explain why it is not seemingly possible unless in tech and/or when there is high and consistent economic growth rates.

If I may chip in, art courses in the west are highly competitive and saturated (e.g. Law, Political Science). They also vary from one jurisdiction to another just like some previous posters have pointed out. Whereas, science is the same everywhere. Even medicine and accountancy that requires you to undergo their own versions of the aforementioned courses are in very high demand. I am a lawyer but I have to acknowledge that science is more important to the development of a country than arts. The Asian tigers of Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong got to where they are today because of the sciences.

Truth is bitter mate. I've been observing this forum for over 6 years and have seen all sorts of nonsense perpetrated by you lots. A man on this very forum bragged about killing his ex-girlfriend in retaliation for her indirectly killing his dad and most guys supported him. No one bothered to report him to the police. I've read 30 year old men talking about their 16/17 year old girlfriends and no one reporting them for dating a minor. In fact, many people supported them. During the peak of the rape saga last year, a lot of people on this forum believed that such women deserved to be raped because of their "attire" even though one of the victims was wearing hijab. Some have called for the genocide on a whole tribe (Igbos) and were not banned or reported.

Nigeria was never united right from independence. We have been living in denial for years. We are too different culturally & religiously. First and foremost, which North are you talking about? I hope it's not the middle belt states of Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarewa, Plateau, Kaduna, Niger and Taraba? Those states own the majority of resources in the so-called "north" and they are not going to join you lots.

Secondly, you talk about feeding the south when you cannot feed yourselves. If you could, you would not be producing Boko Haram, almajiris,Miyetti Allah, Herdsmen and Bandits. A region that can feed itself would not be migrating to several parts of the country just to beg for alms. No, you would farming in the village and produce enough to export to others. You know that this isn't obviously the case.

Thirdly, you are ranked low in all human indexes. Literacy, economically and life expectancy. Whether you like it or not, you lots have one of the highest poverty rate in the world as you keep having more children than you can afford to have. No nation ever progresses when they have more mouths to feed than the available resources.

Fourthly, if you kept up with the latest trends in the 21st Century, you would know that mineral resources is no longer the main source of wealth for any functioning country. It's all above I.T. South Korea is one of the most advanced countries in the world. It has zero resources. It got to where it is through it's human resources. Same thing with Japan, Israel, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. The aforementioned countries are even more advanced than the gulf countries with their oil. Speaking of the gulf, do you know that Dubai has the least amount of oil compare to other countries in the Emirate and the middle east in general? Despite this, it is the most advanced country in the middle east bar Israel. The South is full to the brim with educated people which you don't have. Let's see who progresses first.

Lastly, you cannot leave as your elites are benefitting from the "one nigeria" project. Hold them responsible for keeping you in this ungodly union.

N.B. Please remember that you are a landlocked region. Once this country disintegrates, you can only export your products through Southern ports as it is cheaper than to export them through neighboring countries. If the South decide to impose a blockade on your goods, you are as good as finished.
