This guide is for young Nigerians who are either contemplating going to university or dropping out to hustle. The unemployment rate in the country is very high. In fact, Nigeria is suffering from under unemployment. Yes, there are jobs out there but for every job vacancy there are at least 2,000 applicants. The few jobs that are available are gotten through "connections". Most Nigerians do not have the luxury of having people in influential positions.

So many youths are disillusioned with the system. They are screaming out in despair that "education is a scam". You can't blame them for saying that as you spend so many years in university and there are no jobs available while a trader makes more money in a week that you make in a month.

With no disrespect, the Nigerian educational system and culture has failed the youths. Why do I say so? In this part of the world, family dictates your career path. "Be a lawyer, doctor, accountant or architect". They will not tell you the reasons for doing so. They will not give you the pros & cons of such career decision making. You go to university, your lecturers will not give you any career advice. They will only tell to get a 1st class. Can everyone get a 1st class? They will not tell you how to deal with current job market. They will not encourage you to make a lot fact finding/research. As a result of this, the average Nigerian graduate is already screwed by the time they graduate.

What is the solution to this problem. Well, it's quite simple really. Ask yourself what value/skills you can to the table that will fetch you money in the long run. What value you may ask? Whether you are a graduate or not you need to have something that is marketable to people. A mechanic has a skill that is marketable to people. A painter has a skill/value that is marketable. Same thing with a plumber. The issue is how you "package" it. Even a footballer has value as they are a brand e.g. Cristiano & Messi. Basket ballers too (Lebron & Giannis) to even chess and dart players. As a professional graduate, what value to bring to the table either as an employee/self-employed. Lawyers who carve a "niche" career for themselves stand out compared to general practitioners. Doctors who specialize in a specific field of medicine stand out compared to general medical practitioners.

Even if you want to be self-employed, the message is still the same. How do you stand out from the competition? What are you doing that others are not? Look at Cosmas Maduka. He specializes exclusively on BMW. People know him as the "BMW" man. Michael Ibru was into importation of fish at a time when it was not seen as lucrative.

All this will not solve the unemployment crisis in the country. It is the role of the Government to provide a conducive environment for young people to thrive in and they have failed in that regard. Youths should look at this as a sign to reflect and help improve their condition as the Government clearly does not care about them.

Wrong. An average rich criminal does this. No rich person who suffered for his/her money will behave like this. Only those who killed, bribed or blackmailed their way to power behave like this.

I have been saying this for a while. Nigerian youths have been mentally oppressed from secondary school up to NYSC. They are mentally conditioned to obey without questioning authority. I will say this once, I cannot verify the source of income of most of these "actresses". Nollywood doesn't pay well for them to have the lifestyle they are living. This chick was not even one of the main headliners in the merry men franchise so how can she afford that car? I always laugh when people in this forum talk about the desirability of Nigerian women abroad. I have lived in Europe for a decade and I can tell you that Nigerian women aren't popping like that. The problem that a lot of Nigerian women in the west have is that they refuse to drop their entitlement mentality in Nigeria. You cannot decide to live in the west and expect men to do all the chasing.You cannot be living abroad and expect men to take care of your bills. Not in a cosmopolitan society. Not in a society where bills are split 50/50. You live in Europe where you are a minority and you still act like you are in your father's land? How? Even within the African community, you have a problem because of that materialistic mindset. It's only the ones that were born and bred there that are slightly different as they grew up in that environment. The ones that came as students/job seekers still retain that mindset.

Yes, poverty of the mind is a big problem in Nigeria especially here on Nairaland. Poverty of the mind is the state of the mind that accepts mediocrity, mental and physical slavery. It's not restricted to the poor/underclass. Most "rich" people in this country suffer from poverty of the mind. That's why despise being wealthy, they steal money meant for the development of the country due to their insufferable greed. That's why many employers treat their workers like slaves despite the sacrifices their employees make to ensure that their businesses are profitable. That's why many big women treat their domestic workers like dirt because they have the power to do so. It's also why politicians and other "big shots" can shut down roads, airports and residential areas so that they can celebrate the wedding of their kids with no regard for members of the public.

Nigerians have been impoverished to the point that they believe that only money can make you become a 1st class citizen in their own country. Just look at this forum. Every issue is dealt with by this statement "just get money and everything becomes so simple". "Money stops nonsense". "Hustle o". Go to the romance section. People will say "stop chasing women and chase the money." "Women will chase you once you have money.""Money is the fine bobo". Really? If that's the case, why is it that many men come to Nairaland and rant about their girl dumping them despite sending them to school? Why does she dump you for someone who is more "educated"?

You go to the career section and you have youths ranting that education is a scam. That it's better to be a trader. "Most of the big shots didn't go to school". Who? Dangote, who you lots like to masturbate over, is not only a university graduate but foreign qualified as well. You forgot that his uncle gave him the equivalent of N10million in 1977? Is it Adenuga or Alaikija who are graduates? The likes of Cosmas Maduka and Rasaq Okoya are an exception to the norm. Mind you, their own children are graduates. You say Bill Gates or Zuckerberg? I hope you know that they dropped out of the best school in the U.S. and the world (Harvard) not Unilag or Uniben? I also hope you know that both of them are from privileged backgrounds. Don't go school o. In this digital age, if you don't even have technical education, you will be left behind. Those Asian tigers that you lots so admire got to where they are because they made education their priority.

Let's not talk about the travel section. "What are you doing abroad"? "Stay here and make your millions". Do you think that everyone migrates abroad for financial reasons? People migrate to societies where they feel that their skills will be appreciated. They are migrating because they want to live in a society where simple things such as 24 hours electricity work. Where internet connection is fast and effective. Where health care is affordable for all and not just the privileged. Most Nigerians can't understand this because they are used to a society that is not working.

I have seen people in this forum advice those who aren't happy with their jobs to stay in the said job because "others are willing to earning that salary." That's why many employers exploit people. They know that you don't know your rights and will accept rubbish.

All I am saying is that Nigerians need to start looking at things from a long-term perspective as opposed to a short-term one. The reason why there are so many Yahoo boys and run girls is because a lot of young people are looking at short term ways to make money. Women don't want to build a relationship/marriage with a man. They want a ready made product. They don't know how that "ready made product" made his money. Guys want to "blow" immediately without exercising patience. We need to do better as a country.

Of course he doesn't have skills. The average Nigerian just goes to school to earn his/her degree and assume that a juicy job is waiting for them once they graduate. They refuse to develop themselves and get skills that will make them indispensable. Most Nigerians only look at the short term benefits. They don't consider the long-term goals/objectives. Their own is to "make money as soon as possible, get married and have a big boy/big girl lifestyle". That's why runs girls and g-boys are so rampant in society today.

Most of these lots don't know their worth and will accept any form of insults as long as they are paid. Poverty of the mind is a terrible thing my brother.

OP, please ignore the comments here. You have to understand that most Nigerians suffer from poverty of the mind. They believe that as long as the salary is good they can lose their dignity at the workplace just to earn that money. They don't understand what it's like to do something that doesn't bring you joy or peace of mind. The most success people you see today are people who focused on their strengths and followed their passion. Do yourself justice by setting a timeline to your departure while having a back up plan in case things backfire.
