European democracy works if you've got balls to join them. Initially, they may ignore you, but if you have the charisma and a good understanding of their political culture and social environment they will take you serious and get you really involved. The half Vietnamese Dr. Rösler ( leader of German liberal party FDP) is an example. It's quite different from ethnic/religious bigot infested Nigerian mafia-like political party setups. The more affluent Flanders are a little bit liberal than the Wallonians. Many Africans are living without papers in Flander's port City of Antwerp without harassment from the authorities. I am not surprised....

My take is that, because Gov. Chime having lived in Enugu for a long time made it impossible for him to ignore tackling the city's problems. The British colonists planned Enugu very well. After years of neglect, the City was begging for someone to give it a facelift. Then comes Chime, who breath, ate and drank Enugu! As a longtime Uwani resident, he knew all the nooks and corners of the City. He really showed a big difference from Jim, Madueke and Nnamani, who came in as governors from outside ( USA ) to rule the state. The next governor should be an Enugu dweller.

Coal City is a power house. Jokes apart, owners of Shoprite saw a big potential in Enugu inhabitants. Enugu is the Switzerland in South East. A big middleclass with independent minds and some fine deep pockets. They also know how to enjoy life peacefully . South African's Shoprite naturally smelt money there ; but they also knew that Enugu people will not accept piecemeal services, hence the quality of the shop in Coal City .

Late Gov. Sam Onunaka Mbakwe built most of the major roads in Enyimba City without making noise. Orji, can you bring Enyimba City to the standard Mbakwe left it? A tough order ?

That is a reason C. C. Onoh's death left a big vacuum in Enugu State. Were Onoh alive, he would have called a meeting of the state's political bigwigs to find through the state house of assembly a way to swear-in Mr. Onyebuchi as governor. What is Jim and Ken Nnamani (Enugu elders ) doing ?

pro01: The hotel is a fantastic place to hang out; so many bars, lounges - even a nightclub and a snooker room. All kinds of stuff, live band, assorted chops, etc. . .not to mention an overabundance of girls (for those interested), lol. Her sons did a great job.

Personally, the best place to hangout in Surulere. Forget the stadium folks, Rita Lori is better! Apart from Efik Kitchen off Ogunlana Drive, Rita Lori is a place to enjoy fine meal. The life band is a plus as well. I like them doing Jazz and Highlife tunes. The young Ghanaian vocalist is awesome!!

This woman sef na something else. I've seen her a few times In her hotel in Lagos, and she always inspires fear - her scowling face/gaze and the massive traditional beads around her neck na die. She seems very powerful in a 'spiritual' or 'underground' sense. Governor sef suppose fear. I guess they have unresolved issues, hence the rejection of the Christmas gifts.

Her sons(who returned from the US to take over management)have done a great job by renovating the hotel .

Rita Lori Hotels Lagos/Abuja - fun spots. I always get fresh food there anytime i fly into Lagos late. The Surulere spot lady is still strong sha....

Mr. President must stop appearing weak before those Islamic terrorists. End-time now is only in his fish head( apology to people in Northern Germany, the real " fischkopfen".

With an annual GDP of over $45 billion, Lagos would be the 5th largest economy in Africa if it were a country. With such a statistic, Lagos should be somewhere else other than where Mr. Fashola has positioned the state currently.

With an annual state budget of over $500m for about 10yrs, Delta State should be better developed than Senegal. Absolutely, there is nothing to show for the state's oil wealth. Neither Asaba nor Warri can be positively described as an example of a well spent oil money city . The two governors over the ten years (Ibori/Uduaghan) should be ashamed of their performances. The state has a greater potential than what we have seen so far....

A times I wonder what is in enugu state that people are talking about. The last time a friend visited your enugu, garbage dumps has taken over all the streets and roads, all the ongoing work are presently abandoned, the gov has gone AWOL, govt officials in the state are grabbing the much they can while it last and yet some people will come here and keep deluding themselves.

Enugu state is this and that, yet you guys will not stopping running to Lagos, Onitsha, PH etc for economic survival. Why not you guys stay put in your place and keep watching 'pictures'.

You guys should be more concerned about the missing gov, that alone should take the center stage in all una discussions instead of pretending that all is well, when the whole state has gone up in flames..

@Spydder880, you know those areas as well. Opening those slums with good asphalt roads will boost economic activities there . Mini shops and the like will spring up, thereby keeping the dwellers busy in their domain. Enugu state government must not abandon them. When our economy develops, such places will become estate investment attractions for Nigerian or multinational companies. Examples like that are abound in many developing cities around the world.

I often wonder if Enugu state government has any plans of cleaning, developing or reshaping some of the numerous slums scattered around Coal City. Any person who have lived in Enugu must have heard about such areas like Ugwu Aron, Ugwu Alfred, Iva-Valley, backsides of Obiagu Road, half a dozen ones at Abakpa, Ngene Evu etc. Early this year, i had the opportunity of going to Iva-Valley for the first time. I marvelled at the natural beauty of that part of Enugu. For the first time also, a new asphalt road connecting the area with new market was constructed by Gov. Chime. I inspected a bridge under construction, which will connect Iva-Valley with a bigger slum( i think Pottery is it's name) up Milken Hill. That new road opened some commercial activities in an area that was hitherto difficult to reach. Iva-Valley was a well laid out area with bungalows and lush trees(especially mango), by the British administrators of Coal Corporation during the colonial period. According to a resident, the estate was left to decay by some of the owners of the houses who started building shacks to accommodate more tenants. I was surprised when i noticed that the water taps there are seldom dry. All the houses there still belong to former coal miners or their families. With new roads, such an area could become a tourist hotspot. The Valley is like an egg which contains the history of Enugu. The struggle for independence, better pays, and the fight for freedom from colonial coal mines began in such a place like Iva-Valley.

Her death is sad, but keeping Coal City clean must continue without further delay. Enugu state government must also dialogue with investors toward establishment of a recycling company in the state. Enugu must not be an environmental disaster like Onitsha Ado! Whoever took over from Mrs. Ugwu must act now.
