EgunMogaji2:
@focusmind Sir, what is the way forward here if you’re indeed holding a balance. What does hslbroker2 need to do to be in compliance so you can consider releasing his balance? This is assuming there’s any balance.

I come in peace.
Hello Sir, just because of you and my respect, I may have to honor HSL Broker with a response.

I paid hslbroker 300k to do some windows for me. The guy practically disappeared for weeks and months, giving one excuse or the other. Note that he was the one that gave me a quote of N300K, selected as the preferred bidder and I paid fully for the windows. I kept hammering it to his ears that he needed to do my job, and that I would not bear any cost overrun because of his delays in delivering the job as at when due, which was supposed to be within seven days after payment.

I was on this matter with him for more than 3months and he could not deliver my job. I said ok, refund me my money and let me move on after some weeks. He still refused to refund the money when I made the request. After some months, he came back and told me that prices of materials have gone up and he could not deliver based on the initial cost. I reminded him that I warned him that I would not bear any cost overrun in this project because of his deliberate delays and that I wanted my money back. He finally called that he was outsourcing the job to Adedeward but I should note that the earlier N300K I paid would not stand again and that I would need to pay additional 120k.

My brother, I needed to take delivery of my goods at all cost and I knew that deep down me, I was not ready to pay anything. Agreeing to him was my own strategy of getting my goods. Most people in my shoes would have done the same based on the fact that I was dealing with someone of unstable character. I reminded him that the increase in costs he claimed was his own making as at the time we agreed the job, I paid him what was agreed for him to deliver within seven working days. He did not live up to that part of the agreement.

I later called the new contractor he contracted to do the job, the guy requested for additional 40k to do the mosquito nets and 10k for transportation, making a total of 50k advanced to him. I paid him as I was desperate to get my windows. Lately, I still advanced 25k to him to fix some broken windows, which has been settled. That I told hslbroker to proceed to deliver my windows even when he told me of additional cost of N120K was my last option of getting back my goods, even when he was not ready to make a refund.

In total, I have spent 375k on windows that the initial cost was 300k to be delivered within seven working days. He even deceived me that he had bought all the materials as at time and was about to start work. So, I don't know where I have erred here. I know that he may have sympathizers here, but I believed strongly that I did not do anything wrong. Hslbroker did not deliver my job as at the time we agreed, neither did he refund me back my money as at the time I made the request.

I have used contractors here, Dominionng especially, and I never had cause to regret it. The window ish has caused me so much stress and just today, I had to personally go to Odun-Ade market to buy my tiles myself even though I wanted to patronize one guy here on nairaland that deals on tiles. But to avoid any trouble, I had to take delivery of the tiles myself. Your quote, which is my favorite is now my guiding principle: "Trust is the currency of fraud. I have none".

Finally, the windows I got were of thick imported material made as against Tower agreed with hslbroker. So, I don't know what else to do.

Nothing spectacular but you can see a high level of cleanliness and no litters around.

See a hostel with cloth washing line in the quadrangle and no cloths and other things hanging from balconies, windows etc.

It is a Public and not private school and compared to Nigerian public universities, this looks organised.
This is what most Nigerians fails to understand. Decency and civility will be picked ahead of stupid gigantic structure that litter some of the old generation universities in Nigeria, with students indiscipline being one of the highest in the world all in the name of aluta continua.

You won't understand the extent Nigeria has degenerated until you leave this country. Other countries in Africa, despite being poor still radiates peace, tranquillity, decency and civility.

Nigeria's space is too crude, chaotic, indiscipline and littered with dis orderliness.

I now use agent with strong connection in the aviation sector. Once I was getting late, I call him to check me in because those Nigerian airlines no get joy. Once it is 30mins to departure, they stopped checking people in just to collect extra money from those desperate to replace those that were late.

But here in Lagos the gate with good material will cost btw 250-280k
You are correct. The guy said to deliver to my site is 270k. I have a shaka plate gate we just concluded and I am trying to trade it in for this one and add something on top despite the fact that the shaka plate I did is more expensive than this.

It’s a good looking gate.
Yes, very beautiful. I saw a finished one somewhere when I was passing. Please explain the meaning of the bolded. I equally hate the sight of used engine oil that is normally used to oil the rollers and tracks.

Kudos Man! Some people here think their wards cannot learn these digital skills without access to smartphone.

Have a great day!
Well done bro! Learning the first principle in anything is always the beginning. They should master all the basic components of the normal desktop computer we used during our own time and then laptop. These two systems are connected to the Internet and I monitor them remotely.

Basic knowledge of the physical keyboard of a computer is important and how to type basic things like composition about myself, format the word documents, do simple excel additions and subtraction, type my wife's grocery lists and send to the printer to print them out. These are the basic knowledge I want them to acquire about computer and not subjecting them to the so called coding. One thing at a time.

It is not about carrying tablets and be playing games, coding and forming informed 21st century kids.

No smart phone for my kids for now.

They have laptops and use it for their assignments. They do play with my wife's phone sometimes but all the things they need are in their laptops and desktop computer in their room. They should start their IT knowledge from scratch by mastering desk top and lap top usage before I move them to ipad and smart phones.

Their games and other internet programs are in the laptops and desktop in their room. It is not about carrying smart phones and tablet about.

I don't exceed 45km in all occasions. If I am carrying my wife or family, na between 35 to 40km I dey drive even on weekends for third mainland bridge. There is no hurry. I left Island this morning and the bridge was so free.

I just maintained my 40km, wound down my windscreen to enjoy better sea breeze with my sound system giving me better vibes. No hurry in life abeg. Slow, steady and focused, you will get to your destination in all situations.
PropertiesRe: Behind the scenes in the building industry (collection of funny site stories) by Focusmind: 12:29pm On Apr 17, 2021
Kai, Nigerian artisans could be something else even when you are trying to support them outside the work.

The site supervisor I trusted so much doctored the list of items needed for electrical piping and cabling. The total cost given by the electrician was 750k but my supervisor sent a total cost of N1.550m for the job as he told them not to communicate with me as he brought them.

I came to site and didn't see the electrician. Called him but he didn't pick. He later called me and told me that he had left the job. I asked why and he said he fought with my site supervisor. I asked what caused the fight. He said my supervisor have not given him his complete money in the previous piping work he did.

It was there that he told me to ignore the quote of N1.1550m given to me by my site supervisor and that it won't cost us up to 700k to finish what we wanted to do. The electrician told me that my site engineer told him that he wanted to make much money from this project because he wanted to travel out of the country with his newly married wife.

Note that I was even the one that gave him money to travel to his village and complete marriage rites on the lady's head as he has been living with her for more than one year.

My people, trusting those people below the economic ladder in this country is nearly impossible.

Everybody carry profile for Naija like bag yet the country is as underdeveloped like shit. Title don't mean anything to me, especially in Nigeria.

We can't have all these titles and brains and yet our citizens and children are running away from the country to other countries because of bad lack of inventions that could create jobs. The problem is not just about the leadership of the country but also about the people as the leaders are chosen from the people.

This one don chop land money die! All these obas in Lagos, the land money wey dem don chop no be here. Na so one Baale for Lamgbasa obtain 300k from me for my land o.

I still thank God as I would have lost the land totally. The initial family wanted to obtain N2m from me before the Baale asked me to give him 300k to close out the case. Others were not lucky as they lost their land.

Land administration in Lagos is too chaotic. People's hard earned money had gone and some even paid the ultimate price.
BusinessRe: Share Your Experience Collecting Your Money Back From Your Debtors by Focusmind:
I have lost countless times I lend people money and they refused paying. Even the ones with capacity to pay will still be dragging it, saying, "bros you are ok naa, make you chill for this small money". If you tell family members that you won't give because you have some projects going on, that even make it worse.

For their mind, your project is more important than lending a helping hand. That you are doing projects even shows that money is coming in. So I don't use that strategy again. The current pandemic is what is helping me ward them off. Tell them that you have been at home since last year and doing nothing. That has been my strategy and truly, I have been at home working. It is good when people don't know the type of job you do. Let them be guessing.

Debt destroys families and friendship. I now avoid it.

Car TalkRe: Private Car Owners Do Not Need Roadworthiness Issued By VIO - Appeal Court by Focusmind: 12:13pm On Apr 09, 2021
Judgment is not the problem in Nigeria but its enforcement. How do you explain this to an illiterate VIO Kazeem that stop you at Surulere, asking for certificate of roadworthiness and you show him court judgment, exempting private car owners from getting one. Will he listen to you.

Actually, this certificate of roadworthiness is supposed to be for public vehicles but the corruption in the Nigerian system will not allow them to focus on danfo but will rather choose to harass private car owners.

TMKsouth:
Wow, this is such a tough one. embarassed Unfortunately, the path to a resolution will be a long term one, you know like with apartheid in SA, it took decades to dismantle it.

From what I've heard from South Africans who have been to Nigeria and noticed the lack of public infrastructure is that you've become a selfish society, where many people only lookout for themselves. It's for that reason your politicians and industry leaders fail to act in the common good, which is our principle down here of Ubuntu - that you can't leave other people behind, you move forward together. I've noticed it's for this reason Nigerians prefer conservative/capitalist American presidents like Trump, while we in SA are overwhelmingly sympathetic to the socialist ideals of the Democrats over there. So it's obvious we don't think alike.

So I'm not saying our system is the best, but it appears to be the more sympathetic one, that's why we build infrastructure for the common good. It's absolutely mind-boggling that various Nigerian governments have failed to build at least one quality hospital that your leaders can patronize instead of traveling abroad. I can't even begin to attempt analysing that. undecided But the progressives in your country should not stop exerting pressure, one day there'll be a breakthrough.
Nigeria's problem is systemic and structural and it is not something that could easily be dismantled.

The ineptitude in governance contributed in making Nigerians to be selfish. Our government has made the concept of "everyman to his own" popular and people have bought the concept. That's why the citizens struggles to provide their own electricity, education, security, water and housing. In the process of trying to provide all these amenities for themselves and their families, selfishness is bound to come in as citizens try to outwit one another to gain access to resources.

Honestly, our situation is very pathetic and my heart goes to the extremely struggling families.

TMKsouth:
Hi Focusmind, thanx for the thoughtful contribution. I'm always reluctant to lecture other countries unless I'm dealing with a troll, but I think SA development is obvious to everyone.

Are u talking about Tinubu for 2023? I've seen the name around lately on the forum, but I'm still not clued up on who he is. I've noticed a lot of hype around your VP Osibanjo though, especially the first time Buhari left him in charge. Is he perhaps your best hope for the future??
TMKsouth, All these people you mentioned cannot impact positively on the people or implement policies that would bring Nigeria to the same level of development with SA. The political system in this country makes it extremely difficult for those with growth-oriented policies to contest for elections. The electoral system here is too hostile to progressives and those with good development agenda.

I always get upset when I see my fellow country men argue with you, comparing SA to Nigeria. We have all the resources to at least near SA in terms of infrastructural development, but the inbuilt corruption and its tendencies on our politicians would not allow them to build benefiting infrastructure for this country.

Honestly, other countries in Africa have left us behind but we will keep fooling ourselves here that we are making progress.
TravelRe: TAKE A LOOK Inside Africa's First Certified "Green" Hospital - JUST OPENED (PIX) by Focusmind: 5:20pm On Apr 07, 2021
And yet, Nigerians with their over bloated ego will be challenging SA in terms of development. Until you travel out of this country, you wont understand the extent of damage our leaders have done to us.

People are here now shouting for another typical politician to take over in 2023 and the same thing continues.

TMKSouth, please tell us that SA have left us behind. Corruption has finished our country, Nigeria

I knew it was a coordinated and well planned attack.

I doubt if IPOB or ESN could do such. Imagine a government staging attack unto itself. Honestly, the kind of government we are running these days. Nigeria and Nigerians have never been this disunited in ages. Nigerians seems more united in the 70s after the civil war than now.

Sadly, those that are supposed to build cohesiveness among the citizenry are the ones causing division.
