WELCOME TO LIVING IN CANADA/LIFE AS A CANADIAN IMMIGRANT PART TWOPlease see Part 1 here for reference purposes: PART 1
This thread is about Life in Canada for immigrants.
It is an avenue for people that have immigrated to Canada (with their families) to share their experiences to help future hopefuls.
To learn about immigrating to Canada through Express Entry, go here Express Entry
To learn about immigrating to Canada through a Provincial Nominee Program, see here: here

Highlights of the Body of Knowledge about Nigerian immigrants in Canadian written about in the Living in Canada thread is linked in below posts.
Note however, that these are all personal experiences. Individual experiences differ and the way we interprete them also differ. Take these experiences not as gospel but as a base point for learning more.

Hi All,
It is quite alright to share our understanding about: a. Canadian laws b. mainstream Canadian culture and values
This is information that will help immigrants to navigate their new home.
A discussion about personal values will however always disintegrate into an argument and that is unhelpful as you can't impose or dictate your values on someone else over the barrel of an argument. Certainly not when arguing with faceless interlocutors on an anonymous social media thread.
This caused us to derail the thread during the discussion about marriage in Canada and we are doing the same in this argument about sexual orientation in Canada.
I think by now we all have an understanding of what to expect in Canada. Let's kill the argument please. |

I don't think there is any cause for alarm. Files are routinely transferred to different VOs because of caseload distribution. Someone from an earlier thread got PPR from Montreal VO. Etobicoke VO normally handles refugee cases. They must have unassigned officers and so took up some EE cases. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/contact-ircc/offices/canada-appointment-only.html#onAdeyemmy24: Here is my enquiry... I will like to know if any one has information about file transfers to Etobicoke visa office? It seems my file has been transferred there and I am just wondering why. I am a US resident and my application was initially with CIO, sydney, so from past trends I felt it will be transferred to ottawa or remain with CIOam also looking at ordering GCMS notes too(Aor Oct12). |

You might not get penalized, but the more you write, the more the possibilities for errors which will end up lowering your score, not to talk of pissing off the examiner. cc: nice2 CheesyTee: You do not get penalized for writing above 150/250 words. You may be doing something wrong. Punctuations, spelling error etc. I may be wrong.
You may request for EOR or try BC’s computer-based test if you choose to rewrite. |

That's rough. Hang in there Sis, rooting for you. So hustling for housing is becoming a bigger deal. Corroborates the news on cbc.ca that house vacancy rates are at a historic low. Simply put, there are not enough houses to go round in Canada. That makes it a sellers' market and they can be making things difficult for people as they like. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4923635sistaj: Settlement journey. Pardon my long post...... Always lots to share when I come around to it. I !h been staying with my crew in Apple Hill, Ontario where our family friend lives. Apple hill is a small community of primarily farmers about I hour drive from Ottawa and Montreal. It is really a small suburb which has no primary school or major grocery store. I believe every family here owns a car to get around. |

I concur. For peace of mind, people should put extras in their POF. Canadian dollar is low against the US dollar now, that's why the rates are low now. It might be higher when an agent is checking your file and we don't know the rate they are using. You might end up a few dollars short. For mine, I used N295 to make sure my funds was enough, then used xe.com to present the POF. That made it seem like I had excess at the end of the day. Godisincontrol: @ All.
The point I am making is that rates fluctuate. To be on the safe side convert using a higher rate so as not to develop HBP for fear of the unknown.
Agreed, POF is supposedly locked in at AOR but we have seen cases where visa/case officers have used a different rate and have thrown a file for "review required" due to POF not meeting the required minimum bla bla bla. Review Required though not bad will in most cases cause a spin and the trauma one may go through is something else.
Let everyone do whatever would make them sleep well at night. |

2 gists. Naija, naija.
A. I was with some friends doing Friday night out, when one mentioned they had just sent forth a friend to Canada. "Express entry?", I asked. "No, " he replied. "The wife had been in US for 2+ years before moving to Canada. Light bulb! "Refugee claim?". "Yes, she settled it and now the whole family is going"
B. While doing biometrics at vfs the other day. A mature lady came to sit in line at our back. After a moment, she leaned forward. "I hope they are not going to ask interview questions," she asked. Taken aback, I said no. "Thank God," she said. "I have been rejected by the American embassy 2 times, those people can ask tough questions." Now curious, I asked, "Are you here for permanent residence, student visa or temporary residence" She looked at me strangely and said in Yoruba, "I don't understand your English" So I asked her in the same language, "What do you want to go and do in Canada?" "To work," she replied. "My agent asked me to come here today. That this is the next stage". Shocked, I mumbled Ok and leaned back in my seat. Oh to be a fly on the wall when she meets back with her agent after getting a TRV not a work permit (that's if she gets it). |

I believe your application is still under processing, so yes, you are required to ( see here) and here. However, I think it can only affect your application if it was a Canada based LMIA job offer, under a closed work permit, or you are applying under PNP where you got nomination based on an NOC on demand. Are you not changing jobs? If you are changing jobs, you can wait until you resume the new job and raise a CSE on change of job. OYASALOF: Hello all, I resigned from my current job this December, please do I need to raise CSE to that effect? Cc: joo2018 |

My Educational qualification is B.sc Botany and I work as a Teacher.
I would like to know if I can apply for Canada Federal Skilled Workers Program and PNP as a Teacher without an Education certificate.

TSL: Nope. I did my gift deed at notary public for 2k as well. it's not expensive. I'm in Benin. joo2018: It should vary based on the notary him/herself, location and negotiating ability. I used that figure because she quoted it earlier. You will be surprised how some people can quote funny price to charge you. |

No. But if you do choose to do it, you upload it together with your passport datapage in a pdf. Only make sure you make your current passport datapage as page 1. An easy way to go get rejection is to upload stamped pages and forget to put the mandatory part which is datapage. TITILOLA88: Hi everyone, happy post-boxing day! Please, is there any need to upload stamped pages of passport declared in my travel history section? And where do I do that? |

It should vary based on the notary him/herself, location and negotiating ability. I used that figure because she quoted it earlier. Tojued: Notarising my deed (at a law firm) cost either 5 or 10k. Can't remember exact figure again. I think twas 5k sha. |

Both affidavit (the 2k option being mentioned) and notary public (30-40k) are accepted. Ella99: Lol at shine your eye. Sorry for my "silly" question but this is notary public abi cos someone just said something about affidavit. My guess is cic only accepts notary...i may be wrong. |
